Tempe, Arizona - Mayor Hugh Hallman has been honored by a national organization for his work in championing secondary education needs in Tempe. Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) has selected Hallman for the JAG National Above and Beyond Award.
Nationally, JAG's program to assist high school students in pursuing careers or college educations has helped more than 40,000 young people.
In Tempe, Jobs for Arizona's Graduates has a dropout prevention and school-to-career transition program at Tempe High School and Marcos de Niza High School.
"This past year, Mayor Hallman has stepped up like no one else I've ever seen," Marcos de Niza Principal Frank Mirizio said. "He is very involved and he puts so much effort into the youth of today. He recognizes that they are the future."
Hallman's honor salutes his work in securing donations that allowed the two Tempe high schools to re-start JAG programs in 2008. He also designated Jobs for Arizona's Graduates as a beneficiary of his successful "Team Tempe" fundraising effort for the 2008 P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Marathon.
"It is vitally important to the health of our community that all our residents have the best chances for success in their lives," Hallman said. "JAG is one way we help our youth achieve their fullest potential.
I am humbled and grateful for this honor."
JAG's national office is based in Virginia and the organization's board members include five governors, including Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, and representatives from major corporations like General Electric, Microsoft and Bank of America.
